Seth MacFarlane, creator of TV’s Family Guy was just charged with resuscitating The Flintstones. I’m not sure what to think about this. I like MacFarlane based on interviews I’ve seen with him, and I was a fan of Family Guy during its first two or three seasons. Eventually, however, “Guy’s” scattershot approach to humor became tiresome to me, so I moved on. And, when it comes to The Flintstones, I wouldn’t consider myself a fan per se. Did I watch it when I was a kid? Yeah, of course. Everyone from my generation did. But the memory of Looney Tunes on those post-school afternoons has stuck with me where the adventures of Fred and Barney have not. I hope MacFarlane is smart enough to take a more traditional approach to the writing of his version of the classic show. Something tells me he is smart enough, but my sense of nostalgia for Bedrock isn’t so strong that I’m excited about the forthcoming program.
